Description:
This cast-molded, pressurized resin scale model of the Apollo 11 Command Module measures 14 inches long and 5¾ inches wide. It comes in 1:48 scale, is rendered in fine detail, and includes a display base. All parts of the replica are crafted to scale with their real-life counterpart, adding to its authenticity. Recommended for ages 14 and up. Carrying a three-person crew—Neil Armstrong, Edwin ""Buzz"" Aldrin, and Michael Collins—the Apollo 11 Command Module (named Columbia) served as living quarters for the astronauts during the historic 1969 lunar landing mission. In addition to housing the crew, the Command Module was tasked with bringing the astronauts safely back to Earth. It splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24, 1969, at 12:49 PM ET, 812 nautical miles southwest of Hawaii and just 12 nautical miles from the USS Hornet, the aircraft carrier that recovered the capsule. In 1971, the capsule found a permanent home at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum following a national tour sponsored by NASA. It has since been designated a ""Milestone of Flight"" by the museum.
